Does this controller work with any headset?

Yes. any 3.5mm connected headset will plug directly into the controller. and allow you to use several different Turtle Beach audio enhancements. Wireless headsets can also be used but will not receive any of the Recon audio enhancements.
How many buttons are programmable?

There are two re-mappable quick-action buttons on the bottom side of the controller. Each of these buttons can be programmed with up to four different selectable profiles.
